Sustainable development at the heart of our environment
The city of Issy-les-Moulineaux has set up a citizen-friendly sustainable development action plan for the 21st century.
Town planning concerned with the environment: High Environmental Quality (HQE)
Issy-les-Moulineaux has undertaken a “sustainable” building construction process. The Sports Stadium and the Garibaldi early childhood centre are symbols of this. The same approach will also apply to future large office building projects, with the municipal authorities hoping that the private sector will participate in this undertaking. It also encourages those involved to go even further and to strive for “Very High Environmental Quality”.
Household waste: a new and fresher wind for the environment!
Issy-les-Moulineaux was one of the first towns in France to promote the selective collection of food and goods packaging and wrappings.
A new centre for rubbish sorting and energy recovery from household waste plant is currently being built with a view to replacing the present incineration plant in 2007.
This new site will be equipped with leading-edge technologies and its visual impact will be minimal.
Landscape development on the banks of the Seine
The Seine is an important feature in the landscape of Issy and its banks provide some of its neighbourhoods with their undeniable charm, in particular Saint-Germain Island. In order to preserve the natural character of the banks, eco-workers employed by a professional reinsertion association are in charge of their upkeep and of monitoring their biodiversity.
A well preserved heritage
This concern is visible in the town’s efforts to protect its historic heritage, with, in particular, the renovation of the SNCF's railway Arches and the face-lift given to the Saint-Sulpice Seminary.
These projects are notable for their architectural quality, their impact on local life and their respect for the environment.
Sustainable development and technology: Isséane
Isséane, the future waste processing and energy recovery plant, is a high tech centre and will be one of the largest of its kind in the world located in an urban area. It meets very advanced criteria for environmental quality. The building, which takes into account the 14 targets of the High Environmental Quality (HQE) frame of reference, is buried at a depth of 31 metres and will only rise 21 metres above ground. In order to fit in better with the environment, the superstructure will be landscaped and fitted with a green roof and the façade will be interspersed with wooded spaces. In order to meet major environmental challenges, Isséane’s water requirements will be supplied by the municipal water network for domestic needs and by the Seine for industrial needs. This water will go through an effluent treatment station located within the centre before being discharged into the main sewage system. In terms of quality of life and respect for the population living around the centre, Isséane will ensure a daily reduction of approximately 25% in the number of waste disposal trucks visiting the site by making use of river transport.
